ANNIVERSARYCAST #15 - MINMEI'S JOURNEY

First A BIG THANK YOU for making the Robotech 25th Anniversary Character Clash Tournament a huge success in its first round. This is definitely going to be a truly memorable event. A WORLDWIDE CELEBRATION and anyone that wants to have fun is more than invited! You can get your last minute ROUND 1 votes in before June 25th 11:59 PM!
The "favorites"are making themselves known....but will it be a "CINDERELLA" that makes it to the final match........well that's for YOU to decide!
Also a few nuggets to talk about......
But on to the show.......lol!
Our subject for today is another one of those complex characters that Robotech gives us....and that is the melodious, beautiful but tortured LYNN MINMEI.
From her songs, her hypnotic influence on the Zentraedi, her part in the Macross love triangle, Minmei is one of those characters you can either love or absoloutely hate in the Original 85.
When it comes to the Expanded Universe............whoa.
Her journey in the Sentinels by all rights should kill her..... and I mean literally. But somehow she survives. It can be said....it was meant for her to make it through despite the bruised heart (and face). You see there's a reason to the madness she is submitted to on Tirol.
Without her.......you can't have Robotech.............that simple, simple as that.
Yes.....refer to End of the Circle....lol!
I actually find myself feeling sympathy for her. She is forced to grow up quickly but has to learn about life....and love THE HARD WAY.
Again and again and again.......
But remember, in End of the Circle.....ALL THINGS DO RESOLVE THEMSELVES......and even after 15 years of reading it again and again.....I'm still scratching my head when it comes to Minmei's ultimate role in the Robotech Universe.

RANDOM THOUGHTS 06/23/10 TOURNEY TALK AND MORE!
Why hello there!
From the home office chair another round of musings.....been a few weeks......how time flies...
First off, The Robotech Character Clash Tournament has indeed turned into a WORLDWIDE EVENT. It never ceases to impress me of how global the Robotech fandom is! I'm glad everyone is having fun with it and getting their votes in. Challonge.com gets the big KUDOS on great tournament brackets and the random first round matchups. Some of those matchups, with two days to go in the voting seem to have been more than "decided", but you have a few that we are going to come down right to the wire. Remember; IN THE EVENT OF A TIE, I RESORT TO THE COIN FLIP!.....Please don't let it come down to that. I want winners to be decided by YOUR votes.....you hold the champion's destiny in your hands!
And THANK YOU to everyone who has participated so far....SPREAD THE WORD AND HAVE FUN!
In Round 2 we should really start seeing the "favorites" coming out......but I STILL predict a "Cinderella" story to emerge. That's the beauty of something like this...ANYTHING can happen!

In other news.....
Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles is out on trade paperback..........I may need to stop by my local bookstore to look at it.....but NO chance at all of me actually buying it. But hey, this is just one fan talking. If you like it, that's great!
Running into more and more Robotech web gems out there......it takes some interesting filtering on Google, but they do exist! I need to make sidebar with links to some of them!

Will there be ANY new developments about Robotech's future announced at Comicon this year? Or will it be a wash-rinse-repeat session?
Now I've been critcial of the boys at Harmony Gold....but I will stand by what I said....they owe us NOTHING! You can like or not like what they do with Robotech.....or what they DON'T do with it. Saying "They owe me for my years of loyalty!!!".....hmmmmm.......I refuse to subscribe to that type of thinking. Fandom is a choice...whether being a part of or saying.....enough is enough! For me....there is enough out there for me to enjoy and celebrate.....the rest.....not part of MY Robotech story, that simple, simple as that!

Episode #25- This will be kicking off of our Sentinels Journey. I'm holding off for the moment because of the First Round of the Tournament.....we will get back on track shortly.
A Live Show?........I have to meet certain "conditions" in order for that to happen. (it's all on ME) I'm trying......
A little behind the scenes on how the transition from round to round for the tournament goes....
- Each round ends at 11:59PM. Th Blogger clock takes this time as Pacific Standard Time. This means that it actually closes at 2 AM MY time. (good thing the rounds end on a Friday night!)
- At 2AM I close off access to the blog to just me.
- I delete all the current polls on the blog page.
- I create the polls for the next round and post those.
- I update the brackets, manually.
- I update the blog with a post for the next round!
- I open access to the blog again for voting to commence!
- Go to sleep for a few hours...then record a results show and upload that!
It means a long night.....but ya know......IT'S WORTH IT 'CAUSE I'M HAVING FUN!!!!!

A FEW WORDS AND A PROGRAMMING NOTE!
Hey guys and girls!
The Robotech Character Clash Tournament has started with a BANG! This is going to be an awesome road to the final match! Get your votes in and SPREAD THE WORD. We have fans coming in from ALL OVER THE WORLD WITH THEIR VOTES. Let's have fun and make this celebration of Robotech's 25th Anniversary one for the history books!
I wanted to let you guys know of a programming note. This Saturday, June 19th was going to be our 25th episode and the start of our journey into the Sentinels. With the inaguration of the tournament (and the "tense" moments in getting the polls to work!) I'm going to hold off on that and take the weekend off to attend to "outside the podcast" matters and to recharge the batteries as I kind of "overstressed" with the blog issues. I will keep you guys posted on the new date of that episode.
I'm still going to have an AnniversaryCast next week. We still have about 1 day for our current REGULAR poll questions, so get your votes in on that too.
When it comes to the Tournament, IT'S ALL IN YOUR HANDS! From the first round to the final match, it's the Robotech fans (and a few non Robotech fans who want to have fun!) who will get the final word.
Finally, THANK YOU. I really stressed myself out with this issue with Blogger and the Tournament polls and you, THE BEST FREAKIN' LISTENERS IN THE WORLD helped to ease that stress with your words of the encouragement and that's why this journey has been truly one that I will never forget for as long as I live!

It seems to be a global problem with the polls. I am keeping close eye for a solution from the people at Google/Blogger. I do apologize to everyone who has visited the site and not been able to vote. I'm really frustrated with it myself as I have really looked forward to this event. Hopefully, the problem can be taken care of today.

SOME REALLY PASSIONATE LEONARD FANS OUT THERE!
Really coming to his defense through messages and forum posts....I LOVE IT! But just remember...I have stated that I love the character because of its depth. However, we can certainly disagree upon our own perceptions of the "Supreme Commander".
The true beauty of Robotech is the diverse opinions fans are going to have about the story and its characters....
I certainly have my opinions about Leonard and the rest ....and I always encourage you, the listener, to form your own opinions and come to your own conclusions...
Would be pretty boring if we were just sheep following some wannabe shepherd, hanging and nodding our heads in unison. No fun there....
I prefer (and I think a lot of Robotech fans out there) to be free thinking...less complication there, hee hee!

ANNIVERSARYCAST #14...HIS NAME IS LEONARD!

Beating the heat with some Robotech celebration on another AnniversaryCast!

Our subject for this edition is the character that probably most makes you do a double-take when you look at the stark contrasts of how he is portrayed in the Original 85 versus the Expanded Universe. His name.....ANATOLE LEONARD.
In the Original 85, he is at the head of the Southern Cross. He sees only one viable response to the attacking forces of the Robotech Masters...no quarter given. He wants to see the enemy destroyed and there is absolutely no room for negotiation. He throws every available resource at them, whether those "human resources" agree with him or not. Although in the end there is a "human" victory, you really can't give the credit to Leonard, that goes to a Zor clone who actually just makes it worse for the Earth. Because of the tactical blunders and wasteful attacks. The miltary left after the Masters Saga is in shambles and will be easy pickings for the Invid swarm.
He is willing even to get rid of those who don't agree with his philosophy to the front lines like a Roman Emperor sending troublesome governor's to a far away province. Some of his military startegies make you just want to slap him and say, "What are you a masochist???..Do you get a kick out of our forces getting beat up?"
In the Expanded Universe, this gluttony for punishment is explained......boy is it ever!
Our first real look at the EU Leonard is in the Malcontent Uprisings comics miniseries. He is a shrewd when it comes to politics and Leonard here sees the Zentraedi as an excuse in taking advantage of a situation to solidify his powerbase. Bill Spangler really tells his story quite well, especially in a. The "shocking moment" of the series comes when his connection to the aliens is revealed.
The Jack Mckinney novels take it even a step further......religious fanaticism...holy order......a deep seated hatred for anything "Robotech" related....
.....and Leonard literally loving to get his ass whooped. (for those of you that don't understand....listen to the episode) Leonard's "skeletons" in the closet are indeed disturbing.
And THAT makes for such a rich, complex and intriguing character. He'd make a hell of a college term paper......
I can't help but think of the word "freaky" when I go back to look at the Original 85 and see him. There are many fans that will totally disavow EU Leonard and that's ok. At the end of the day...I see him as another diverse character in an incredible story.
As part of this AnniversaryCast, we have the results to our recent poll questions and one of them turned out to be our very first "100% to 0%" result!
And since we take down the old....we put up the NEW...we have a fresh basket of questions for you to pick from!
With the character of Leonard, it brings up the neverending subject of canon vs. non-canon. I give you my feelings on the subject with the help of an old mentor......."Bruce" . I can honestly say it helps me look at Robotech without complicating myself.

As part of this AnniversaryCast, we have the results to our recent poll questions and one of them turned out to be our very first "100% to 0%" result!
And since we take down the old....we put up the NEW...we have a fresh basket of questions for you to pick from!
With the character of Leonard, it brings up the neverending subject of canon vs. non-canon. I give you my feelings on the subject with the help of an old mentor......."Bruce" . I can honestly say it helps me look at Robotech without complicating myself.

And to cap it off I will give you a few more nuggets about "The Summer of The Protoculture Times". A lot of celebrating.....a lot of fun........A LOT OF ROBOTECH!
It all starts next Wednesday, June 16th with an event where the worldwide Robotech fandom can make a statement.
I'm so excited I may start it sooner.......that's a maybe though....

Hi all
Sorry I haven't been around for the last week. Been kinda laying on the low low and catching up on personal matters....but I'm back! We'll have an AnniversaryCast and NEW POLL QUESTIONS this Thursday!
First, thank you to Bill Spangler for his time on our last episode. To think, this kid from the Midwest getting to interview the "history makers" in the Robotech Universe.....WOW!
I think back to my very first recording....it's always with pride and sometimes mixed in with "I had NO IDEA it would be like this!" , LOL!
Do you know that Robotech was going to be only ONE PART of the original concept for the show....I'll tell you about it sometime!
Next week is a VERY BIG one for the show! We officially kick off "The Summer of The Protoculture Times".
What is that going to entail? Well first off we will kickoff a WORLDWIDE EVENT where Robotech fans from around the world can do what has been the number one thing here.....TO HAVE FUN!
I will have specific day and time by the end of this week!
And I take a "journey within the journey" with the Sentinels. This will stretch itself for a few hours after outlining it. It may no longer be considered any type of "canon" according to Harmony Gold. (like it's EVER MATTERED to me what they have to say about the subject.) , but it is something that IS a big part of the Robotech tradition. It's part of history and it will be an honor to cover it. Not as an expert or a finger wagging "gospel preahcer".....but as a fan.
Thanks Carl.....without you here it will never be the same....but I know you're still partying the 25th Anniversary with us from that new plane of existence...I miss you!
