THE ROBOTECH FILES - We've been talking Robotech comics, now we talk to one of the big names involved with name. In a Protoculture Times Interview via email, it is my pleasure to present comics writer Bill Spangler!

OFF THE SCIFI SHELF - Fandoms come in all shapes and sizes and the fans in it express there love of what they are a fan of in different ways. This is explored in the documentary film "Trekkies". While some may scoff at people dressing up as their favorite character, when you look at this film, it's just fans showing their love. It's the same in Robotech. Fans show their love by watching it, doing different projects  (umm podcast) and in cosplay. In some ways when you are a fan of something, it can inspire you in the most positive ways and we'll talk about that here. You come out from this movie KNOWING that the word "Trekkie" is NOT a bad word. Definitely recommended for any sci-fi DVD shelf!

WHAT IF IN ROBOTECH...... - We go over some listener responses to the question from our last show, "WHAT IF IN ROBOTECH, THE INVID MADE IT TO EARTH BEFORE THE ZENTRAEDI?". The beauty of talking about these types of scenarios is the "infinity factor" on how many ways the story can go. (makes your head spin that's for sure...lol!)

WHATS IN A NAME? - Special segment. I've always been interested in seeing the original series that gave us Robotech. I have seen the original Macross and hopefully in the future I get to see Calvary Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. Part of this interest is the conversion of names from the Japanese series to what they become in Robotech. In some cases, there are some similarities but in others it is something totally different. We take a look at how the characters names started as and what they wound up being in our beloved Original 85.

***NOTE - I am not a native Japanese speaker. If I mispronounced/butchered any names, please LET me know. I have the utmost respect for the Japanese language (which I'm actually wanting to learn) and I want to make sure I got it right!

ANNIVERSARYCAST 12 +1 - THE B*TCH YOU LOVE TO HATE!

Great to be back guys and girls!

We don't say the number..........we call it 12+1 here on The Protoculture Times! LOL!

In continuing our Robotech character journey, we take a look at a character that just gets my goat every time I see her.....and that makes her an awesome addition to the Robotech roll call. It's the cool but alluring, Nova Satori!

The key to a character in any story is to evoke emotion from the reader or viewer and Nova is definitely one to evoke them. For me she can be a real bitch!...lol!

Despite being a constant rival to Dana Sterling and cold as a truckload of ice, she is someone that fulfills her oath of duty to the GMP and I can't frown on that....

The novel adaptations of the Masters Saga bring out her more softer side in a flashback where she remembers an encounter with Claudia Grant in New Macross City. Kudos to Brian and Jim (Mckinney) on the generation bridge.

Nova gets fair time in the Expanded Universe too. "Beyond the Invid Storm" brings out her hard bones military side. She particularly enjoys to put her antagonists in the corner. (I don't know if Wolff wants to slug her or......well knowing the Colonel's, shall we say, "female adventures", it leaves you thinking if they are made for each other!)

She also has a role during the Invid occupation and it's aftermath in the Comics universe. Invid Aftermath is one of those titles that gets a lot of bashing from people but in the character sense, it just cements for me what I had felt about Nova......she'll do what it takes and to whoever it is to get the upper hand in a situation.

And YES....she is briefly mentioned in End of The Circle...

Call it a love hate thing for me....I just love to hate Nova and that for me makes her an awesome character!

Random Thoughts 05/25/10...Folding from topic to topic

Hello all!

Beating the pre-summer heat with a few thoughts of randomness...

"Execute jump!"

For The Protoculture Times, it's going to be a great summer! The thoughts have become plans....the next step......ACTION. I'm excited about the immediate future so STAY TUNED!

You guys and girls  are the greatest listeners in the world.....at least for me!

It was AWESOME doing the the Spanish episode and connect with a large portion of the Robotech fandom. It turned out into an almost 3 hour episode. While it's something I can't do every week, this certainly will not be the last time I do because I enjoyed the experience immensely.

Smokey, The Little Guy says hello to everyone! (MEOW!)

The Sentinels episode will either be a very long episode or broken off into parts. I will let you knowbut  I am REALLY looking forward to it!

With so many characters in the Robotech story, it gets hard which one to pick for each AnniversaryCast. Each one, like the generations, have their own charm to them and sometimes can invoke a lot of reactions! Anyone that you'd like to hear about, I'll do my best to make it interesting, but ya know.....if you have your OWN thoughts that you'd like to express...GO FOR IT! Email, Facebook or Skype, it's your Robotech, voice out on it! 

My feelings on forum and website "memberships"......Well, each site is going to be different. Some people are just NOT going to be wanted and that's each sites administrator's prerogative. To have a warped sense of entitlement thinking you can go and run amok on someone's website or forum....well you might run into a problem with more than a few people especially when there is a "precedent." To complain and say it's unfair and totalitarian, bottom line, not welcomed means NOT WELCOMED. 

Let me put it this way.....with ALL that I have said and written about Harmony Gold, the "boys"  and their "marks"....do you really think I'd survive there if I wrote that stuff on THEIR forums?

Please.....why do you think I started this blog??....LOL!

Here's something...

Who can opinionate on Robotech????

Let me answer this question from the get-go.....EVERYBODY.

From the staunchest of supporters to the most passionate of haters and everyone in between, people will have their two cents to chime in about the franchise, the fandom, individuals in it..etc., etc. etc.

If someone likes Robotech?.....Ok.

If someone loves it?.....ok again.

If someone loves it but can bash different aspects of it?.....again.......ok.

If someone absolutely hates Robotech with a passion and would love nothing more than to see it fall into the abyss of obscurity as an abomination to the anime and science fiction world?

Yeppers....ok too.

I've said in the past of how I was very naive to certain things in Robotech when I started all this. One of those things is the disdain that people have for Robotech. I never realized how bad it was and the digs that it receives. I've had people confront me and scoff at my love for it and for even doing the podcast.

How has all that "hate" affect anything I do?

Not in the least bit........

I never have, nor EVER WILL have the need to justify or defend that I'm a Robotech fan or EVEN LESS apologize for it. People want to hate it and wish it ill? Fine by me. That's their affair. Hasn't affected the way I do my show and it's something I don't concern myself with. And it should be noted that I number non-Robotech fans among listeners to the "Times". I must either provide them with some entertainment or I make them hate Robotech all the more. But hey, that's their opinion. I do the podcast to have fun, not preach or defend the imaginary "Robotech gospel" or vanquish the "infidels" in some kind of idiotic war. (I.E. Macross VS. Robotech)

Someone takes issue with that......do something about it......OTHER than talk.

By the same token, a fan of Robotech has every right to bash the product, call out Harmony Gold, point out the flaws or even say TO HELL WITH THIS! Robotech is by no means perfect. The whole "good Robotech fan" VS the "bad Robotech fan" concept is a retarded one right down to its core.

Who is ANYONE to tell me or any other Robotech fan how to enjoy it and whether an opinion can be given about it?

Those anyone are NOBODYS,  that simple.....simple as that.

Anyone takes issue with that......do something about it......OTHER than talk.

So let's see how it works.....I'll be called a Macross Purist.....that I suck......that I'm not a Robotech fan....or is it first that I suck....then a Macross Purist....or is it first that I'm not a Robotech fan.

Same old, same old. Talk from the ITGs (Internet Tough Guys). End of the day....it's just what it is....TALK.

And....anyone takes issue with that......do something about it......OTHER than talk.

I say this because to actually see someone attempt to do something about it......OTHER than talk would really show how "far" the fandom will have come....."defending the honor" of Robotech.

(ROLLS EYES)...I'd laugh if it weren't pathetic.

Honestly, I've got a show to produce, something much more relevant than continue wasting my time on this subject.

Love Robotech, hate it, or don't give a shit about it, be my guest! Have opinions on it, knock yourselves out!

Just remember the concept of "someone else's opinion"...LOL!

EPISODE #23 - MORE COMICS, BEST RT COMICS SITE EVER, WHAT IF? & HANGER DECK #2

THE SHOUTOUTS - If I'm not grateful to the worldwide audience that this show has, then I should just quit. But since I always am.....I'll be sticking around!

From Europe to Asia, North and South America and all stops in between, the world becomes a smaller place with that common bond which is Robotech!

A few RANDOM THOUGHTS (DING!)....

I was thinking of doing Robotech Karaoke.......on second thought.....HELL NO!....that would be cruel and unusual punishment to you guys in making you hear me sing "Lonely Soldier Boy".....(yeah .....it's THAT bad!)

Here's a "Robotech confession".....I get mushy when I listen to "To Be in Love"......yeah that's right....JT's just a big softy at heart....I recently found someone's own rendition of this Robotech classic.....and it just really got me.....(sniff, sniff)

Check it out here....and kudos to the girl singing the song.....truly beautiful!

ROBOTECH FILES - Continuing our exploration of the Robotech comics universe we take a look at two "one time shot" titles. They start and end with one issue but their content is certainly something that can spand into further conversation....

First we have the return of our friend Bill Spangler (SHOUTOUT!) with Robotech #0, "What's Past is Prelude" published in 1994!

Now the story itself involves a character seen briefly in the Masters Saga but heavily used in the Expanded Universe and that is John Carpenter. Although the story is short (and kinda ends with opening for more) it gives you John's perspective of all that has happened since 1999 as it takes place after the Symphony of Light. This character appears a few more times in the comics world and of course in the Mckinney Novels.

Now there are some extra goodies in this issue which really make it all the more interesting and that is interviews with the comics team at the time, one half of Jack Mckinney, James Luceno and an article on the "roots" of Robotech written by Bill himself! Just like John Carpenter, Bill Spangler "pops" up alot as a writing credit in Robotech comics....AWESOME!

The second title we look at probably one of the more "powerful" stories in Robotech and that is Robotech: Escape!

The central character in this addendum to the New Generation story is the Invid prince Corg. What starts off as a cliche story ends in a way I didn't expect which left me very surprised and as what happened to me with the character of Anatole Leonard with The Malcontent Uprisings/Zentraedi Rebellion, after reading Escape, I really don't look at Corg the same way......In brutality, I think he even gives Khyron a run for his money!

As with pretty much ALL Robotech comics, these will be a hard find. But check used book stores, comic book store (towards the back of it!) and Ebay. Although one time shot deals, they are worthy additions to any Robotech collection. And when I say worthy, take a look at the STORY that is being told. You don't get a lot of color in Robotech comics but when you really delve into the tale, it IS enjoyable to read!


OFF THE SCIFI SHELF - We do a small review of Batman: Gotham Knight. It's a compilation of six Batman tales, produced by SIX DIFFERENT production teams with their own animation and if you're a Batman fan, this should be in your collection. (AND GET THE TWO DISC OR BLU-RAY VERSION!!)

Now there was a two fold in choosing this....one it's a great DVD and TWO, I really feel something like this would WORK FOR ROBOTECH. How about some new animation to link the each one of the generations without destroying the base continuity? Now when I say work I am talking about Warner Brothers, NOT Harmony Gold and it's quite a "coincidence" that WB distributes Gotham Knight.....

But I'm just saying......


ROBOTECH WEB GEMS - And a shiny one folks on this edition......probably the best Robotech Comics website I have seen and it should come as no surprise because it was done by none other than one of the most knowledgeable Robotech fans out there, Johnathan Switzer aka Captain JLS.

Check it out!

It hasn't been updated in awhile but what is there is just fantastic. In one section of the site, he actually lists the comics in the order as they would have happened IN THE ROBOTECH TIMELINE!!!!! What more can be said than.......AWESOME!  My full kudos to you Jonathan!

WHAT IF IN ROBOTECH...... -  A brand new segment! What if you took one aspect of the Robotech story and changed something.....how would it  affect the big picture....what would happen?...what wouldn't happen?

Well now....we speculate on it.....

On this first edition of this recurring segment, I speculate on how things would change IF Khyron had just left Earth and not attacked the SDF-1 in the finale of the Macross Saga......my head spins even considering it....

I invite all to participate with their thoughts on this scenarios and for out next episode...think about this one....

THE ROBOTECH A.R.T. SEGMENT - Although I retired the segment name "IN THE ROBOTECH SPOTLIGHT"  for Carl, I don't want to stop giving the deserved praise to the things and people in the Robotech Universe that deserve it......hence from now own it will be known as the A.R.T. Segment.

And the A.R.T. does stand for something......what.....well listen to the episode silly!

We see the return of our old friend Dave aka ICEBLUE and if his Hanger Deck Project #1 was AWESOME....you can times that by 10 with his new endeavor....THE TOMAHAWK HANGER DECK PROJECT!

ANNIVERSARYCAST #12 - THE FRUITCAKE MAN, ANGELO DANTE AND POLL QUESTIONS

Well hello there!

It is so awesome to be back after a brief hiatus! And the Robotech party continues with a brand spankin' new ANNIVERSARYCAST!

Our subject for this time is the all Souther Cross grunt, mission first, Zor Prime disliking,  and chauvinistic towards one Dana Sterling, Angelo Dante!

Now I like "Angie". He's no nonsense about his approach to military life and is always ready to take on the fight in the 15th Squad. While he has his "reservations" about his new CO, Dana, he is a reliable soldier who thinks about what's best for the team before himself. You see him struggle in accepting Zor Prime into the 15th because of his alien origins. Is he a xenophobe? I wouldn't go that far, but there is a definite distrust of anything non-earthly. (As a survivor of the Zentraedi Rain of Death, one definitely might have a negative attitude to aliens, especially those attacking your home planet, yet again!) He's big and can knock his opponent into the next Robotech generation. (Zor Prime gets a taste of this when he makes the mistake of mouthing off to Angelo.)

Angie's portrayal in the Expanded Universe is something I have always looked upon with a smile. Those reservations about Dana turn into....."something" else by the end of the Masters Saga novels! The epigraphs in the books with the letters to his parents basically lying to them of how things are really going and the references to the fruitcakes they send him (which would be an interesting backstory) really adds to the human factor and someone you can really identify with. (On a personal note, fruitcakes are something I never really acquired a taste for, but that's just me, LOL!)

Then you have The End of the Circle....where all things resolve themselves in the Robotech novel universe. He gets some pretty good "novel time" and we find out that his preference in women is the "muscular Amazonian" type.

Now on this cast we also discuss the results of our last poll questions. Thank you to everyone who participated.

RANDOM THOUGHTS 05/05/10

Hi all!

In the midst of a family visit, I found a moment drop a quick random lines here....how ya all doing?

Carl Macek's memorial service was this past Saturday. From what I heard, it was a beautiful service and a true celebration of our friend's life...

It's strange..although he is gone....I know he's still around for the celebration of Robotech...

IT'S ANNIVERSARY TIME BABY!!!

We'll probably have a poll results show this weekend but I don't know about a full episode....we'll see...I can definitely say that I do miss podcasting....

I really need to start writing more...even non Roboteh topics....hmmm..maybe a new blog?

I really like tournaments.....stay tuned!

I was out for a walk last night.....gives me an idea....maybe record a segment while on one?

Sometimes, happenings in the Robotech universe can be quite tumultuous and sometimes downright outrageous....I have my thoughts and opinions on it....but doing my show and having fun "gets in the way"...LMAO!

Number of downloads?.....I have no clue.....BUT, I already know the show is successful.....

Watch an episode of Robotech....and enjoy it...that's why it's there!

20% option of the RandomCasts sometimes scream for a return.....and it's getting louder....

I know the Sentinels was something that Carl was very big on and I hope that for Episode 25 that I do him and the story the deserving credit....
