EPISODE #22 - THE CELEBRATION CONTINUES

On April, 17 2010, Carl Macek passed away at the age of 58. This week, an unprecedented show of love has been demonstrated by the fans to his memory. The Protoculture Times extends its condolences to his friends and family, especially his wife, Svea. I feel that the best way I can honor his life, his memory, his legacy, is to continue the celebration of that which he gave us.......ROBOTECH!
Hi all!

THE SHOUTOUTS!!!

The Robotech fandom made itself present in many different ways to say THANK YOU to Carl....

Karen - Words will never describe of how lucky I am that the love of my life and the best friend I have ever had are the SAME person......I love you so much honey!.....

Nenad - You have taught me that it is best to concentrate on what matters and ignore what doesn't!

Vivian - Your words of wisdom I carry with me always!

THE ROBOTECH FILES - We conclude our coverage of Robotech II: The Sentinels -THE MALCONTENT UPRISINGS!

We see get Breetai get his OWN ISSUE (WOO-HOO!). We also find out the big twist in this story.....and we see how Max and Mirirya resolve their conflicts and they do it in the best way possible.....TOGETHER.

Once again a big kudos to Bill Spangler and the team involved with this. For this Robotech fan, it ranks very high in the Expanded Universe Stories!

OFF THE SCIFI SHELF - We go 30 years back when Saturday morning cartoons were SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS! A big blast from the past as we talk about THE CHALLENGE OF THE SUPERFRIENDS!

Wikipedia article

Challenge of the Superfriends-Superfriends Rest in Peace Pt1
Challenge of the Superfriends-Superfriends Rest in Peace Pt2

Corny storylines...YES!....Still wondering how is it that the Legion of Doom didn't come up with a better plan to eliminate the Justice League?...DOUBLE YES!!!

Still love it after all these years?????....OH YOU BET!

That theme song is classic...you identify immediately just like with Robotech's!

ROBOTECH WEB GEMS - A very special edition, we go to RobotechX and Robotech.com to read some of the words from fans friends paying tribute to Carl Macek.....

RobotechX thread
Robotech.com  thread
Thoughts from those close to Carl

A touching tribute created by UEG Productions...

That leads us in to IN THE ROBOTECH SPOTLIGHT. I have decided to retire the name of the segment. I will continue to showcase those things and people in the Robotech Universe that deserve all the praise in the world.

But that spotlight.....that eternal spotlight will now and forever.....belong to Carl....

And to cap it off.....A final toast to the man himself....

So where do we go from here? Well I truly believe that Carl would've wanted that the celebration of Robotech continue as though he were still here....the show of love to him over this past week has been nothing short of incredible. There will always be a void that can never be filled and it will be different. But Carl will still be watching of how what he gave us has meant to so many of us...
Here on The Protoculture Times, the celebration continues.....

THE LIGHT THAT NEVER DIES

To understand death
Of it to make sense
I dare not to try
It's a task too immense

To ask that one word why?
The ancients have not a clue
Maybe there is no right answer
Perhaps this is true

The sadness that arises
From those that we lose
It is something we can't debate
It is something we can't choose

Perhaps the best solution of all
In this moment that we mourn
That in death it is not en ending
In it something else is born

The Day births the clear
The Night births the dark
Every life births its moments
Every moment makes its mark

To celebrate a life
Even at its end
Pays tribute to that soul
Puts our hearts on the mend

The sadness births the joy
And from the tears that we weep
Sprouts the memories that we will treasure
Of the love that we will keep

Carl, life took you too soon
It stole you from our sight
But to your family and to many others
You will still be our light

It's a light with no limit
vast as the clearest skies
For now and forever
It is The Light That Never Dies.....

The best way to honor you, my friend is to do what your intent was with Robotech.....to enjoy it.

Godspeed on this new journey....and THANK YOU ALWAYS...

CARL MACEK 1951 -2010

Rest in Peace Carl.....

Because of you a legion of fans were introduced to something special....

No matter the discourse....the crazy happenings that go on at this moment, back in 1985 you had magic in a bottle and you gave it to the world...and speaking for myself, I WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL. Without you, The Protoculture Times would not exist.

The best part about it is that the whole intent of Robotech....was to entertain us.

You succeeded my friend.

I will miss you.....

ANNIVERSARYCAST #11 EVERYBODY'S FAVORITE KISSIN' COUSIN, LYNN KYLE

Hola!

It seems like forever since I got in front of the mic. Makes me that much more excited for another AnniversaryCast!

Download this episode (right click and save)

First a big SHOUTOUT to Malcontent Uprisings comics writer Bill Spangler. Bill, thank you for the kind words about my coverage of the series and thank you for this addition to the Robotech story.

Bill's trajectory in comics is not just in Robotech, but also original stories from the universes of Quantum Leap and Alien Nation. One of his most recent works is from the world of a vintage TV show from the 1950s, TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET!

CLICK HERE FOR INFO ON THE COMIC
CLICK HERE FOR INFO ON THE TOM CORBETT, SPACE CADET UNIVERSE
SAY HELLO TO BILL ON FACEBOOK

The trade paperback edition of the series should be out in May! Pretty nifty!

Now for this cast, in keeping with our roll call of Robotech characters, we talk about one of the more polarizing figures in the Robotech Universe. One that I think takes a journey of "redemption" in the time he is present....

The haunted and saturnine, the brilliantly gifted but ill starred, the undefeated and cursed.....LYNN KYLE.

Now if it's just the Original 85 character, it's someone whose teeth you want to kick in )providing you're a greater kung fu master than him!)

Expanded Universe...this is one tortured soul......

I see Kyle as someone conflicted between the "principles" he has and the instinctiveness to survive. For him, war is wrong, yet when it's crunch time, he wants his side to come out on top. He inflicts that conflict on his cousin/lover Lynn Minmei andn it drives them apart.

During the "lost era" he is willing to join the Malcontents in a self believing noble effort to defend themselves against the Earth Government he holds so in contempt because he believes in the Zentraedi cause to try and survive on the ravaged Earth.

Once we get to the Sentinels.....we see his resolution.......AND redemption........of the permanent type if ya know what I mean……

Wow....a character who's NOT resolved in End of the Circle!

If you have your own thought about Kyle....door's open....I do realize their is an Anti-Kyle League out there.....

Hmmm...may bring back the RandomCast......I DO still retain 20% option......LOL!

Maybe some Random Thoughts posts before then.......

Don't forget, we still got poll questions until Saturday night....so get your vote in!

EPISODE #21 - EXIT ORIGINAL 85, ENTER EXPANDED UNIVERSE!

Why hello there!

Great to to be smilin' great to be alive and great to be back for Episode #21 of The Protoculture Times!

Download this episode (right click and save)

I do AnniversaryCasts, MegaResults shows but it just doesn't beat doing DA' MAIN SHOW!

What's on the lineup?

THE SHOUTOUTS! - Showing that the Robotech fandom is indeed WORLDWIDE! Peoples chiming in from such places as;

New Zealand
France
Brazil
United Kingdom
Florida
Georgia
Montana
Kentucky

Lanza-Orellana Family- Awesome trip you had and I'm glad you are all home!
Brian3D - Thank you for the Itunes support!
Lobizon - Gracias por tus palabras!

Some RANDOM THOUGHTS about Sylvain White and the Live Action Movie....

And guys and girls, THANK you for making Episode #20 the BEST EVER. From the guests to the greatest listeners in the world, it was a magical moment and an AWESOME TIME!

And we have almost come to the end of the BIG EVENT in Robotech's anniversary month, The SDF-25 MECHA TOURNAMENT. What a tournament it has been and shortly we will crown DA' CHAMP! Thank you to ALL who participated and had fun with it. That was the name of the game and the gratifying feeling that I got from the response only "motivates" me for more.......STAY TUNED!

THE ROBOTECH FILES - For almost the entire life of this show, we have concentrated on the Original 85 and the time has come to take that step in this segment into the beyond.....Robotech's Expanded Universe!

The first we take is into the comics world with the mini series THE MALCONTENT UPRISINGS! In this episode we will cover the first 6 of the 12 issue series...

Even after 20 years since it was published, it still is quite a read! My hat's off to writer Bill Spangler and the team for this series. It brought out some secondary characters as the main focus and gives you a side of them so far removed from the original Robotech story!

OFF THE SCIFI SHELF - I am an 80's guy and it sure had it's share of "tough guy " movies and the film that we talk about on this edition is one that created a notable science fiction franchise still popular today, PREDATOR, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Wikipedia article

One production note. Originally, the role of the Predator was given to another 80's tough guy Jean Claude Van Damme and the alien looked a lot different than the Predator we've come to know and "love"

Am I RELIEVED that neither Van Damme nor this "Predaor" make it to the final cut! I mean How could you NOT love this one ugly motherf......

Brings a tear to your eye doesn't it......LOL!

PROTOCULTURE TIMES POLL QUESTIONS - They are back with a VENGEANCE and they are already up for you to vote and we go over each one!

IN THE ROBOTECH SPOTLIGHT - the light shines brightly this time on a gentleman by the name of Tana Sarnt. He's a Robotech fan with a Robotech dream. Dreams are all about hope and action and this guy has BOTH.

Check out his website and his dream here!

My personal feelings about the LAM aside, I am totally rooting for this guy and his dream, because it's an AWESOME feeling when dreams do come true, I know from experience.

Once again, I am truly blessed to be able to interact with so many talented people out there in the fandom! Small projects, big projects, they are what keeps the boat afloat in Robotech. It's called effort and HEART!

Since you like visiting here Harmony Gold and "lapdogs".....you can quote me on the following....

ANNIVERSARYCAST #10 - THE MOTHER OF ALL...................INVID!

Hey all!

I hate pain. It hurts, makes you cranky....you want to feel better.....

So let's do another AnniversaryCast!

Download this episode (right click and save)

We first talk about the BIG EVENT, the finals of the

SDF-25 MECHA TOURNAMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We've come to the home stretch! Will it be destiny or will it be a Cinderella story coming to pass?

Well...you guys and girls decide that!

We also talk about the results from last week's poll questions. (No new polls this week, but they come back with a vengeance for Episode #21!)

And since this IS an AnniversaryCast, let's keep talking some Robotech characters!

This time it's the Mother of All........Invid! The Queen Mother, the Invid Regis!

She is there from the beginning.....and when I say beginning I mean waaaaayy before Episode #1 of the Original 85 and she is there at the End.....End of the circle that is. Her falling for Zor leads to some dire consequences for the rest of the galaxy....including the world she is destined to visit that takes her to a new plane of existence for her and her children.

Kind of ironic.....human seduces her, humans nearly destroy her planet.....Flowers she's looking for is on a human planet..comes to the conclusion that the most adept form on her new homeworld.....is human!

She just can't get away from us can she?

While she is vengeful and hands the good ol' Earth its ass, can the argument be made that the Regis is a mother who is looking to protect the best interests for her children?

Hmmmm......perhaps in a future discussion....

Well, I did make it through despite the pain.....something that's beginning to really bother me.....but for a few moments, I get to put that to the side and do something I really love!

IT'S ANNIVERSARY TIME BABY!!!!!!!!!

Seeya this Saturday for EPISODE 21....feelin' lucky for this one!

RANDOM THOUGHTS 04/05/10

Hi there!

Feeling a lot better! These damn allergies with this crazy midwest weather! Not enough to keep me from throwing some musings out there to ya! Sorry about the delay in things, I'm itchin' to get back behind the mic!

What an event the SDF-25 MECHA TOURNAMENT has turned out to be! The main objective was met and that was to have fun. I said way back in my first episode that the fun factor seemed to have been missing in Robotech and I'm glad people have really gotten into it.

The FINAL MATCHUP is already underway! So just vote, vote.......................and vote, tell friends, tell relatives...only one mecha can be crowned DA' CHAMP!

After last week, I feel very RENEWED. It's not just good times....its GREAT TIMES right now and probably even better in the weeks and months ahead.

There is no reply to the ignorant like keeping silence.....nothing else needed to be said.

Kudos to Nenad Petrovic and UEG Productions for weatherinng the storm that is Harmony Gold. I didin't know Tommy and the boys had dibs on Star Trek and Gundam art.

And when it comes to "piggybacking" Robotech to bigger and better things, it's called building a resume.  If they didn't make any money out of it, but someone else takes notice of their talentand wants to put it to use for non-Robotech projects, more power to them because it comes from the result of the recognition of hard work and dedication, not Harmony Gold's "property"

Since Harmony Gold's Robotech Division  views fan efforts as a punch to their own egos (more like laziness), they play the role of a child exclaiming "NO! MINE!"  and they have a tantrum in the form of a cease and desist order when they can't "persuade" someone to give up all the results the fruit of their labor.

If you drew Veritechs as a kid and kept them or you have kids that like drawing, I would start putting them in storage because Tommy and his lawyers may be coming for you......

Ok, Ok... now that last part was exaggerating on my part.

But then again, this IS Harmony Gold we are talking about...hmmmmm?

LOL!

Peculiar how franchises such as Trek and Wars permit fan films AS LONG AS THE WORK IS NON-PROFIT, something which UEG stated over and over again. For some of the people involved in these productions, it opened the door for more awesome opportunities. One example is James Cawley who produces the Web based series Star Trek: Phase II that has been around for awhile.  Turns out that last year was able to secure the license for a Buck Rogers web series.

Talent and hard work.......it goes a long way!

Did CBS, owner of the Star Trek Franchise have a beef that the talents of a fan went beyond Star Trek meaning perhaps financial success for that fan?

Uhhh.....NO.

But how am I going to compare the parent company of Star Trek against Robotech's parent company??? Apples to Oranges.....or to put it more accurately....ice cream to horse manure.

But hey, Nenad and UEG is working on Artemis now....

But on to some other news...and this one has to do with the Robotech Live Action Movie.

Thanks to ScifiWire for the following;

French-American director Sylvain White—whose movie The Losers opens on April 23—confirmed that he's interested in doing a feature-film version of Robotech, the 1980s animated sci-fi TV series, but added that there's no deal in place.
Speaking to fans at San Francisco's WonderCon on Saturday, White said:
"Well, it's not a project that's greenlit, so you know, ... It's a great cult series. When it came out, I actually saw it in France, growing up. I saw it in French. It's a pretty amazing cartoon. And I'm hoping it's going to come to fruition. I read a draft that's really good. ... I'm interested in doing it, but the project is not fast tracked or anything like that, so there's no official thing. There's no deal. ... They sent me a draft. I liked it. It's a work in progress."
Tobey Maguire is producing the live-action Robotech movie. Various writers—including Smallville's Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark's Lawrence Kasdan—have been attached to the script. We'll keep you up to date on any developments.

Take it for what it's worth everyone....

This news is going to be so twisted and misinterpreted that I'm not even going to get into it. Memo and Maverick have already started that. You guys and girls  make your own conclusions and form your own opinions because that's the right of each and every fan!

What's even worse Memo flexes his mod muscles and challenges the "naysayers" to post on Robotech.com. ......guess he needs to meet his quota of bannings.

And his counterpart turns "draft" into "Seems like the script is complete" (but Maverick has admitted that he purposely embellishes for "the cause")

Maverick_LSC claims fans have Peter Pan syndrome....but who really needs to grow up?

In all seriousness, sometimes Fric and Frac's crusade of "one holy vision" of how Robotech fans should be is really creepy. I truly think that they hold the general fandom in contempt as misguided souls and have appointed themselves as preachers of the Robotech gospel.

Well Sylvain White did say....."It's a great CULT series".......(FACEPALM)

I stand by what I feel about the Live Action Movie......1 CHANCE IN 5......

Seeya tomorrow for an AnniversaryCast where we will talk poll results, finals of the tournament and more!

ANNIVERSARYCAST #9 - MY THANKS!

Hi all!

I've always wanted to keep the lines of communications with what goes on with the show. It's short but makes its point about how I have been feeling lately.

This week was pretty rough...a lot of soul searching and thinking about the future. When you really get to take a look at the bad and ugly side of a journey, it makes you question that if it's time to take another path.

I want to thank you all for the kind words of support these last few days.

Taking something from the Star Trek franchise and using it for my Robotech journey...
