RANDOM THOUGHTS 04/05/10

Hi there!

Feeling a lot better! These damn allergies with this crazy midwest weather! Not enough to keep me from throwing some musings out there to ya! Sorry about the delay in things, I'm itchin' to get back behind the mic!

What an event the SDF-25 MECHA TOURNAMENT has turned out to be! The main objective was met and that was to have fun. I said way back in my first episode that the fun factor seemed to have been missing in Robotech and I'm glad people have really gotten into it.

The FINAL MATCHUP is already underway! So just vote, vote.......................and vote, tell friends, tell relatives...only one mecha can be crowned DA' CHAMP!

After last week, I feel very RENEWED. It's not just good times....its GREAT TIMES right now and probably even better in the weeks and months ahead.

There is no reply to the ignorant like keeping silence.....nothing else needed to be said.

Kudos to Nenad Petrovic and UEG Productions for weatherinng the storm that is Harmony Gold. I didin't know Tommy and the boys had dibs on Star Trek and Gundam art.

And when it comes to "piggybacking" Robotech to bigger and better things, it's called building a resume.  If they didn't make any money out of it, but someone else takes notice of their talentand wants to put it to use for non-Robotech projects, more power to them because it comes from the result of the recognition of hard work and dedication, not Harmony Gold's "property"

Since Harmony Gold's Robotech Division  views fan efforts as a punch to their own egos (more like laziness), they play the role of a child exclaiming "NO! MINE!"  and they have a tantrum in the form of a cease and desist order when they can't "persuade" someone to give up all the results the fruit of their labor.

If you drew Veritechs as a kid and kept them or you have kids that like drawing, I would start putting them in storage because Tommy and his lawyers may be coming for you......

Ok, Ok... now that last part was exaggerating on my part.

But then again, this IS Harmony Gold we are talking about...hmmmmm?

LOL!

Peculiar how franchises such as Trek and Wars permit fan films AS LONG AS THE WORK IS NON-PROFIT, something which UEG stated over and over again. For some of the people involved in these productions, it opened the door for more awesome opportunities. One example is James Cawley who produces the Web based series Star Trek: Phase II that has been around for awhile.  Turns out that last year was able to secure the license for a Buck Rogers web series.

Talent and hard work.......it goes a long way!

Did CBS, owner of the Star Trek Franchise have a beef that the talents of a fan went beyond Star Trek meaning perhaps financial success for that fan?

Uhhh.....NO.

But how am I going to compare the parent company of Star Trek against Robotech's parent company??? Apples to Oranges.....or to put it more accurately....ice cream to horse manure.

But hey, Nenad and UEG is working on Artemis now....

But on to some other news...and this one has to do with the Robotech Live Action Movie.

Thanks to ScifiWire for the following;

French-American director Sylvain White—whose movie The Losers opens on April 23—confirmed that he's interested in doing a feature-film version of Robotech, the 1980s animated sci-fi TV series, but added that there's no deal in place.
Speaking to fans at San Francisco's WonderCon on Saturday, White said:
"Well, it's not a project that's greenlit, so you know, ... It's a great cult series. When it came out, I actually saw it in France, growing up. I saw it in French. It's a pretty amazing cartoon. And I'm hoping it's going to come to fruition. I read a draft that's really good. ... I'm interested in doing it, but the project is not fast tracked or anything like that, so there's no official thing. There's no deal. ... They sent me a draft. I liked it. It's a work in progress."
Tobey Maguire is producing the live-action Robotech movie. Various writers—including Smallville's Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark's Lawrence Kasdan—have been attached to the script. We'll keep you up to date on any developments.

Take it for what it's worth everyone....

This news is going to be so twisted and misinterpreted that I'm not even going to get into it. Memo and Maverick have already started that. You guys and girls  make your own conclusions and form your own opinions because that's the right of each and every fan!

What's even worse Memo flexes his mod muscles and challenges the "naysayers" to post on Robotech.com. ......guess he needs to meet his quota of bannings.

And his counterpart turns "draft" into "Seems like the script is complete" (but Maverick has admitted that he purposely embellishes for "the cause")

Maverick_LSC claims fans have Peter Pan syndrome....but who really needs to grow up?

In all seriousness, sometimes Fric and Frac's crusade of "one holy vision" of how Robotech fans should be is really creepy. I truly think that they hold the general fandom in contempt as misguided souls and have appointed themselves as preachers of the Robotech gospel.

Well Sylvain White did say....."It's a great CULT series".......(FACEPALM)

I stand by what I feel about the Live Action Movie......1 CHANCE IN 5......

Seeya tomorrow for an AnniversaryCast where we will talk poll results, finals of the tournament and more!

IT"S ANNIVERSARY TIME BABY!!!!.......REVIVE FOR 25!!!

  1. I stand by my hopes that a Live Action Movie does get made, with the caveat that Harmony Gold's Robotech department doesn't have any major say in it's creation :-) http://prototechnology.blogspot.com/2010/04/my-hopes-for-robotechs-future.html

  2. Anything is possible. That's why I retain that 20% of hope. I prefer that Harmony Gold have NO involvement seeing as how their Robotech have handled the franchise. I truly believe they actually have no involvement and it's all in Warner Bros. hands.

And very AWESOME blog Mech! More fans need to get out there and voice their thoughts on things in the written form!

    Take care!

  3. HG had every right to protect their Franchise.
Why? They had business relationships to protect, it is that simple. To be honest UEG is lucky they wasn't sued. They have that right too.

What UEG was doing, was no longer just a Fan devoted piece, it was done as a company entity, was referred to as one, was called that one, and planned as one... but when it suited them was called just a fan piece.

They was told to stop and didn't, there is a difference between a group of Fans and a corporation built to make artwork and video, that so far is just building something that is based on work they don't have explicit permission to use.

I do understand Artists, and thus a Animation company as a whole wanting to gain experience, but there are right ways to do it, and wrong ways. If you work is based on someone elses; Get Permission! Also be well aware they will always have creative control. If they don't like what you create as a 3rd party, don't be suprised if they tell you no.

Fans are allowed fair usage and fair replication of content, and that is under the discretion of the holder of said trademarked material on which it is used.

It no longer becomes fair usage if a company is formed to produce more works, and looked to build a business relationship with the company and was denied twice.
Yet continues to do it anyway. They had a chance to release the work they did as Fans, and refused. The terms might of been alittle unfair in their eyes, but it's HG content by right, not UEG, so they want full control, they need to focus on something that is uniquely their own.

I'm just worried their Artemis project is alittle to close to they was told to stop in the first place via this Cease and Desist Order. Guess that is their problem to worry about.
