EPISODE #22 - THE CELEBRATION CONTINUES

On April, 17 2010, Carl Macek passed away at the age of 58. This week, an unprecedented show of love has been demonstrated by the fans to his memory. The Protoculture Times extends its condolences to his friends and family, especially his wife, Svea. I feel that the best way I can honor his life, his memory, his legacy, is to continue the celebration of that which he gave us.......ROBOTECH!

Vivian - Your words of wisdom I carry with me always!

THE ROBOTECH FILES - We conclude our coverage of Robotech II: The Sentinels -THE MALCONTENT UPRISINGS!

We see get Breetai get his OWN ISSUE (WOO-HOO!). We also find out the big twist in this story.....and we see how Max and Mirirya resolve their conflicts and they do it in the best way possible.....TOGETHER.

Once again a big kudos to Bill Spangler and the team involved with this. For this Robotech fan, it ranks very high in the Expanded Universe Stories!

OFF THE SCIFI SHELF - We go 30 years back when Saturday morning cartoons were SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS! A big blast from the past as we talk about THE CHALLENGE OF THE SUPERFRIENDS!

Still love it after all these years?????....OH YOU BET!

That theme song is classic...you identify immediately just like with Robotech's!

A touching tribute created by UEG Productions...

That leads us in to IN THE ROBOTECH SPOTLIGHT. I have decided to retire the name of the segment. I will continue to showcase those things and people in the Robotech Universe that deserve all the praise in the world.

But that spotlight.....that eternal spotlight will now and forever.....belong to Carl....

And to cap it off.....A final toast to the man himself....

So where do we go from here? Well I truly believe that Carl would've wanted that the celebration of Robotech continue as though he were still here....the show of love to him over this past week has been nothing short of incredible. There will always be a void that can never be filled and it will be different. But Carl will still be watching of how what he gave us has meant to so many of us...
Here on The Protoculture Times, the celebration continues.....

IT'S ANNIVERSARY TIME CARL!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Actually, the Zentraedi Rebellion novel only exists BECAUSE of the "Malcontent Uprising". Luceno (alone - Daley was already sick, and/or working on the Star Wars radio dramas) put his own dark spin on what was a much better story than he could write alone (note all the dark conspiracy crap from the novels - he even turned the tragic hero of "Cyberpirates" into a serial PEDOPHILE!). He screwed up facts from the comics just about everywhere (for example, turning the Centaur into a conventional tracked tank).

Another thing, is that Spangler's original intent was to show the genesis of Leonard's dislike of the Zentraedi, which Luceno morphed into a pre-existing condition.

When Antarctic Press had the license for Robotech, Greg Lane approached me, as he wanted to write a prequel to the Malcontent Uprisings, and wanted me to consult with him on his script (and I would have gotten some of the original layout pages of the comic, had it occurred). However, Antarctic had its license suddenly pulled, before the series could be scheduled.

One of the things we discussed was the fact that the only version of the story Miriya heard was Seloy's - and that it was probable that it was simply a domestic quarrel at that point, touched off by Seloy's political activism causing issues with Leonard's military position, which in the southlands WOULD involve him being surrounded by lots of people with anti-Zentraedi bias.

And, how things played out in the Malcontent Uprisings, was that
    1. Leonard blamed Seloy for the loss of his son, in the Massacre (that while done by his underlings, was not anything ordered, but caused by a panicked or trigger-happy destroid pilot)
    2. The resurgent malcontent violence, much of it targeted AT him from his troops doing the massacre, led him to start becoming the monster they believed him to be.
    3. Of course, hearing that Seloy had survived just made things worse.
    4. But, most importantly....

Consider that Miriya (a Zentraedi) not only denied him his revenge on Seloy, SHE KILLED HIS SON. Is it any wonder, then, that Leonard & Emerson's relationship (which appeared to be quite cordial - note the exchange between Rick & Lisa in the Sentinels scripts*) started taking a nosedive when Emerson took in Dana & Bowie. MIRIYA'S DAUGHTER LIVED - while Miriya killed his son. It would also explain why the 15th ATAC kept getting stuck into pointy end of things - Leonard wanted Miriya (and by this time, Rolf, too) to experience the loss that Miriya had inflicted on him.

    * From the script for Episode One of The Sentinels:

    Scene 289:

    Rick Hunter:
Lisa, I hope we're making the right decision. Leaving the Earth defenseless while we go off chasing some dream. The more I think about it the more apprehensive I get.

    Scene 290:

    Lisa Hayes:
The Robotech Defense Forces are strong. Uniting under the leadership of General Leonard and Rolf Emerson. They'll be able to take care of things while we're gone.

  2. Once again, I enjoyed your podcast on Bill's MU work, especially your recitation of the Ron Bartley article which is reminiscent of the epigraphs in the novels that I've always loved. And in this case, the Ron Bartley piece had even more detail than the average epigraph. I have the comics, but they're not readily at hand -- your podcast provided a valuable service to me just now! Thanks!
