RANDOM THOUGHTS 02/04/10

Work was kinda sucky today so a few Random Thoughts is the usual cure for occupational blues....

I've seen a few comments from this past weekend's conevtion stop with Tommy Yune and Carl Macek...nothing new and almost the same slideshow Tomm'y used for past conventions...

I can't believe he still uses the "Prelude sells for almost $80 on Ebay" schtick!" (DOUBLE FACEPALM)

If you're a Facebook user, I put a real nice drawing made by Lynn Williams, author of Atlantech up on my page. Girl, you got some serious talent!

See Tommy what you can do when you really APPLY yourself!

I've been wondering and anybody that wants to chime in you are more than welcome to. You have the Shadow Chronicles, a Tommy Yune product. He retcons some of the canon to work it into the story. The Sentinels are pretty much discarded, very loose if any connections to the story that has been around for 20 years...

Could it be that Tommy really wants to disassociate the Original 85 from the franchise? I mean in the last few years, what has been the REAL focus in Robotech from Harmony Gold's standpoint?

Shadow Chronicles....

In this, the 25th anniversary of the Original 85...somewhat of a slap in the face to what started it all. Like an unwanted stepchild, Tommy orders it to its room so he can showcase his "baby".

Macross Rights?......Does it matter?...Apparently to Memo and Maverick....it's EVERYTHING! Try and contradict them on Robotech.com. Hee hee! (Warning: You WILL get banned)

And Maverick..I've concluded you are just a seriously disturbed individual...I'll be watching "World's Dumbest Criminals" now....

I wonder what a typical "day at the office" over at Harmony Gold is like....I'm open to theories.

I think the Fan works keep the spirit of Robotech alive...Tommy, you can learn so much from these people...maybe learn to put some heart and effort behind the "work" you do for the franchise..

The poll questions are shaping up pretty nicely...keep at it people and take advantage of the freedom to vote!

Rereading the Masters Saga novels is a treat. A lot of people put it down and that's the diversity of opinion for you. The novels really helped me see the story beyond the original animation. Expect a lot of epigraphs to be read this go around!

So many little Robotech websites out there that go unnoticed....The Protoculture Times will try its best to "notice".

I really enjoyed Random Thoughts Lightning Edition on the last RandomCast. The DING! really gave it something different.

I'm just a guy who was crazy enough to do a Robotech podcast, the jury is still out on my sanity!

A lot of fans are praying  for a Live Action Movie....I think Harmony Gold is doing the same.

What's more believable...Paramount Studios "quaking in their boots" on the chance that a Live Action Movie is made...or Harmony Gold "quaking in their boots" on the chance that a Live Action Movie doesn't get made?

Guys, I just don't think it will work....or happen! Ok...let me rephrase that....1 chance in 5.

Does anybody notice how when many people talk about The Shadow Chronicles, they don't attach the word Robotech to it. Hmmmm....the wonders of the human psyche!

A lot of passionate Robotech fans out there with so much knowledge....they should make a podcast!

One of my major hangups is second guessing myself....
What will all the criticism about Harmony Gold's inaction for the Robotech franchise result in?.......Absolutely nothing!...but fans have a right to criticize...there are some though who think you should bow your head and obey...LOL!

IT'S ANNIVERSARY TIME BABY! Harmony Gold is Harmony Gold. It's about Robotech! I celebrate it for the entertainment it's provided me for 25 years through the Original 85, the novels, the comics, the rpgs. And I know Carl Macek takes a beating from fans out there, but I will always be grateful to him and the entire crew back in the early 80s who got in the studio to bring Robotech to life.

See, you CAN criticize the Harmony Golds and Tommy Yunes of the world and still love that Macross, Masters and New Generation! LOL!

IT'S ANNIVERSARY TIME BABY!
To the domestic and international fandom....how about we get together and toast Robotech for 25 years? Email me to find out how!

Smokey the Little Guy says hello! (MEOW!)

Joke Time:

Little Johnny folded his hands and prayed to God, "Oh God, I have a really important question to ask you! "
The ground shook, the heavens parted and God himself appeared to Johnny and said; "What is thy question my son!"
Johnny said meekly "Will there ever be Robotech Live Action Movie?"
God looked at him thoughtfully and said "Not in your lifetime my son. You may ask another question."
Johnny then asked "Will Shadow Rising ever come out?"
God started to chuckle and said "Heh, not in MY lifetime!"

Sorry folks, I just had to......LMAO!

I don't know how much longer I can keep up with this...but I'll share that ONLY with you guys ;-)

The final episode of The Protoculture Times will be..........................................................................

Seeya in Episode 16!

REVIVE FOR 25!

ya... no where near $80,,, update your info people!

And ya know, moderators should moderate, not impose the will and company line at any time that the company is questioned... oh, and they should be identified on their profiles too! No idea that Mav and Memo were moderators until I was told by McKeever... in general they just come off as a pair of jag-off fanboys... how would anyone know they are supposed to "keep the peace".

And the Robotech Fan Page on Facebook has like... 2,500 fans? Wow,, that is really a great base to make one of the "Top 10 grossing movies of all times"... really explains things when the Official fan page has 2.5k and the unofficial fan page has 97k....

Whew... sorry, needed to give my random thoughts too.

  2. JT,

great job on the last Randomcast Lightning Edition! Not only was it entertaining but most importantly it was cathartic for you! lol XD Venting is one of many ways in relieving stress and you certainly did that with this one! The DING! element was a great touch, in fact, you should make it a permanent fixture to make the Randomcast stand out from your regular podcast.

    But enough of the praise...

You didn't adequately, I'm not sure if at all, address the points I raised from the previous blog! Mainly what was discussed in the RTX thread: "Anyone losing interest?" though to your credit you did touch upon that issue, albeit unintentionally, at the end of Episode 15. Maybe, I hope, you can address the questions and issues in the near future with your next Randomcast.

Anyways, again, I loved what you did with your recent Randomcast, you gave it the zing that it really needs to stand apart from your regular podcast and which at the same time allows you to vent your frustrations that we're all feeling about regarding the state of the franchise.

  3. Oh, before I forget, check out sumthing.com and watch this trailer called Legends.

There could be a possibility (which might irritate you or just plain piss you off, JT since you are a naysayer that a RLAM or anything related to RLAM production wise will ever materialize) that WB may be working or trying to work something similar for Robotech in the form of a Direct-to-DVD of short stories with the employment of animation studios to produce new Robotech content. Whether or not Carl Macek will be involved in something like this remains to be seen. I have to stress that this is just a POSSIBILITY and is simply just one fan voicing their thoughts about what could be happening or may happen but I figure that such a deal could happen if and when production on the RLAM is officially announced.

  4. Cheetos!

You are absolutely correct and I apologize for not going over the items you mentioned on the RandomCast! I will cover them on the next one and probably do it the same..."LIGHTNING EDITION" with all the DINGS!..LOL!

When it comes to the RLAM, the possibility of it doesn;t annoy me in any way and if it came out, I would be sure to check it out. But I don't think it's going to happen and when I think about the possibility that it might, I think about the live action Dragonball Z movie and that's a scary thought!

Fric and Frac can tout it all they want. There are fans out there that just don;t think that this will work. And I'm still og the opinion that Harmony Gold has no SAY in it.

I actually would be open to a direct to DVD release of something along the lines like Batman: Gotham Knight. A few stories related to the original 85 story (non Shadow Chronicles continuity) would be something I could actually enjoy =-)

Just as long as Harmony Gold has NO HAND in it...

Let me know what you think about that?

  5. Looking forward to the next RandomCast with all the DINGS, JT! :)

The image of DragonballZ thankfully doesn't come to mind when I think of RLAM because I haven't seen the movie. The trailers for it yes, but it hasn't traumatized me to the point that I mentally cross-reference it with RLAM. Thank-god for short-term memory, heh? ;)

A Direct-to-DVD release ala Batman: Gotham Knight would be a good thing for Robotech as it would be a viable platform to showcase different animation styles and not be pigeon-holed to one specific style that many have come to expect which they have for the last 25 years. With signs of WB pushing forth with their Halo: Legends DVD I am hopeful that something similar for Robotech will happen and if it were to be produced without Harmony Gold's meddling, I think it would open alot of doors and possibilities that could lead to something greater for Robotech's future.

I mean if these stories, however short, were to be realized they could potentially fill in the gaps between the three generations. I personally want to see a story involving the Southern Cross cast. I often wonder what happened after Catastrophe. I know it has been documented briefly in the novels and comics but if the aftermath of the episode were to be elaborated further in a fresh original way in the form of original shorts? Then, hell yeah, that would be sweet. Will we get it? Well, if Harmony Gold had it their way they wouldn't allow it because as long as Tommy Yune is Creative Director anything Southern Cross gets swept under the carpet.

The problem that we have here, JT is that the demograph that HG has targeted is a rabid anime audience who cannot accept that Robotech can be much more than a cartoon with strong ties to Macross. People who love their Macross Saga need to get over that type of thinking that Robotech should be a continuation of Macross or something that must have strong elements of Macross in it and should begin to think of Robotech as a science fiction property not tied down to any particular animation style or story ethos that is solely reliant on the Macross universe which I believe Carl Macek had always envisioned with The Sentinels and Robotech 3000 but unfortunately, so far, the people who've led and managed the franchise after his departure have been at the mercy of this fanatical anime audience.

The question worth asking is if Carl were to reclaim the reins of continuing the story of Robotech will he persist with his vision or bow down to the anime fans who expect Robotech's future to be exactly like Macross?
