RANDOM THOUGHTS 01/05/10

Greetings to all in 2010!

First Random Thoughts post of the new year!

Working on Episode 12 + 1, (no, not going to use THAT evil number, LOL!) Now that I've concluded the Original 85 story, I can move on to what's been beyond that and there is quite a bit. We'll see what we start out with.

I feel a cold coming, hopefully it takes its time to kick in so I can get through the episode, so right now it's soup, vitamin C and cold medicine!

Hey Kevin Mckeever, why no "official" statements on the main Robotech.com page? Since you call yourself an "official" source and all your little teases about how nonbelievers to the Robotech way "will be sorry"...why not say it so that's the first thing visitors (and potential fans) can see it?...just sayin!

BTW Kevin, have you read the Terms of use for your website yet?

Well it's the 25th Anniversary year!...I AM EXCITED. Racking my head on how to celebrate....I've got a few ideas that I will let you know about shortly....

TO ALL INTERNATIONAL LISTENERS, LET ME KNOW WHAT YOUR FANDOM IS LIKE IN YOUR PART OF THE GLOBE! PROTOCULTURETIMES@GMAIL.COM

Am I seeing things?.....Robotech.com moderators "invading" other forums? Click here to check it out! Kudos to the comedian, you sure did your homework! LMAO!

Speaking of that website.....they were down for maintenance...had my fingers crossed for some change....but alas......

What part of Robotech's expanded universe do you love the most?....Or hate the most?...I've heard from both sides!

Be prepared for lots of polls....your opinions count!

What's your Robotech memory?......Mine?....Well one is that the Novels brought some peace to otherwise chaotic times for me. I invite you all to share yours!

And always, ALWAYS remember, the TRUE Robotech story is the one that's true for you. Don't let anyone else make that choice for you.....

Seeya for Episode 12+1!

REVIVE FOR 25!

  1. JT,

let me direct you to this forum:

    http://forum.dragon-city.org/

This is what every Robotech forum should aspire to.

Honestly, when I first visited this forum it felt like I just stepped into the Garden of Eden.

Everyone there is so friendly and they give nothing but plenty of good cheer and words of encouragement to one another, they don't tear each other to shreds when they give constructive feedback and from what I've seen they don't try to contest each other as to whose word is more credible in the topics that they debate in.

And they've had it tough too. After their series was cancelled in 2006, they're still holding out hope and excitement for its return which I think puts this fandom to shame.

In essence, their forum has a sense of unity and creativity and their willingness to share their knowledge and enthusiasm towards each other is refreshing and a joy to witness which I feel is incredibly lacking in this fandom where it reeks of nothing but cynicism and negativity.

I wish every Robotech forum was like this.

  2. Hi Cheetodust!

I can certainly understand your feelings about the forums....

I think the biggest plague in Robotech is a warped sense of entitlement exhibited by certain parties in the fandom. These parties have an obsessive need to "impose" their gospel onto the rest and expecting that everyone accept it as truth. If you don't accept it, you are deserving of all the wrath, censorship, insults, andadmonishment that comes your way. Ridiculous, isn't it?

The podcast I do is about "One fan's journey..." and I hope that I have relayed the message that what I talk about is just one fan's opinion. Fans should form their own opinions and come to their own conclusions. Stand by them and defend them with civility and respect and ALWAYS knowing that there will be those that agree...but also those that will disagree with one's opinion. Some people just can't handle that and therein lies the hate and bigotry that hurts the franchise.

At the end of the day, what is Robotech? IT'S A STORY. Not an obsession, not a holy crusade. Just a story. Some people will enjoy it...some won't.

Unfortunately that is in an ideal world and what's reality is just isn't. You just roll with the punches and go forward. It could be so easy for me to turn my show into a profanity laced, facist type of affair. I leave that to others. I have better things to do...like The Protoculture Times! =-)

Good to hear form you CheetosDust! So tell me, what is the Robotech fandom like in "The Land Down Under?" I would really like to spotlight Robotech fans from all over to get their thoughts on it!

    Best regards!

  3. Haha sprung! You are correct, JT! Yes, I do hail from "The Land Down Under"! I wonder how you figured that out? :)

I would venture to say that the Down Under fandom is not as organized as Chile's or any other country's fanbase and is pretty much non-existent as a group. It's not to say that there aren't any Robotech fans out here in Australia, it's just that we're not as organized in the collective sense and that we don't have monthly meetings or get-togethers. But I have met some people who are fans and have fond memories of the show, they're just not really passionate in the sense that they collect the toys, games, merchandise, or everything that has a Robotech label on it.

You might not know this but back in 2008 an official Robotech Convention Tour was organized for Australia and was ready to go except for some strange reason HG decided to pull out at the last minute. Convention organizers went through all the hoops and protocols that HG wanted them to go through and it seemed that the whole thing would pan out but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be and when I found out that the tour was canceled I was disappointed. I mean, if they could afford to go to China and hold a big show for their Asia-Pacific fanbase then why couldn't they follow through with their promise to hold one for Australia? I don't think Kevin McKeever ever gave an official explanation as to why they cancelled the trip. And this was before the whole economic crisis started so yeah, I don't expect much from HG for this year's 25th anniversary. They certainly dropped the ball when it comes to treating their worldwide fanbase as far as I'm concerned. These days, I'm fairly skeptical and weary after their continual broken promises to give us something good for the franchise. I can only hope that the fans can make the best with what they've got to pull us and this franchise out of this stagnant idle state, not for this year but for the many years to come.

Honestly, I have more hope for shows like Dragon Booster than I do for Robotech. They might not have the biggest collection of merchandise but I can turn on to my local tv station and watch episodes and then if I want, go to the forums online and converse with other fans of the show without having to deal with the issues that you brought up about people imposing their will on others.

Despite the hate and bigotry that faces the franchise and fandom I believe this could be a good year for Robotech. As Yellow Dancer sings: "Life is only what we choose to make it, let's just take it, let us be free..."

Btw, great job on the 25th Anniversary logo! :)

Warm regards from Down Under (in 93 Fahrenheit heat),
